The US Geological Survey arrived on the night of the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck southern California on July 5. Photos from the scene showed that the ground was cracked and roads were badly damaged.

The Bureau quickly started monitoring and analyzing the aftershocks of the earthquake. The SmartSolo Scientific three-component seismic data acquisition instrument was used to monitor the aftershocks of the earthquake activity in California.
